ONE of the area's best-loved entertainers is set to perform a rare gig in aid of Colchester's Roman Circus Visitor Centre.

Singer songwriter and author Martin Newell is hosting an evening of one-man entertainment at the venue in a bid to boost awareness of what he believes is a hidden gem.

Set to be a night of poems, some of Mr Newell's much-loved tunes, stories and above all laughter - the proceeds will go towards promoting the centre across town and further afield.

Mr Newell, who lives in Wivenhoe, said: "The Roman Circus is a charming little venue which holds 100 people.

"I do not think anyone has done a gig there before.

"This place is a really big deal and we have the only one in the country. It should be an international attraction."

Self confessed rebel Mr Newell made a name for himself in the 70s and 80s performing in various rock bands as well as having a successful solo career.

Some know him better for his literary work and he is thought to be the nation's most published poet.

His extensive back catalogue means he can now pick and choose when and where he wants to perform and last year his show Eye Tunes at Colchester Arts Centre was in aid of Colchester Hospital's glaucoma service - where he underwent pioneering surgery to save his sight.

But history and archaeology are two of his biggest passions so the Roman Circus was the obvious choice of good cause to support.

"What the archaeologists need to help them promote the centre is someone with a bit of time," Mr Newell said.

"I am hoping because I have made a name for myself people will come along.

"The centre is the kind of place which captures the imagination but I don't know how many members of public know it is there.

"What we have at the moment are these metal signs which point in the vague direction of the centre.

He added: "What it needs is a colourful poster, nothing dry, mechanical or corporate, something which has been done by an illustrator to get people's imagination going.

"With a little bit of imagination we could have something really special."

Martin Newell at the Roman Circus takes place from 2pm on Sunday, June 2.

Tickets cost £10 and can be purchased from Colchester Arts Centre at colchesterartscentre.com.

Refreshments will be available and revellers can even bring their own wine.
