SEVEN environmental campaigners who staged a protest outside Southend Airport said it was “perfectly formed” demonstration.

The Extinction Rebellion team met at Manners Way/Rochford Road roundabout from 9am on Thursday morning.

Jon Fuller, 61, of Martyns Grove, Westcliff organised the protest, and said the experience was “gratifying”.

He said: “A small, but perfectly formed, group protested against pollution from the flights at Southend Airport.

“The police turned up and were very polite and supportive. The manager of Southend Airport Holiday Inn turned up to offer us all free teas and coffees but didn't want his picture taken. A Ryanair employee gave us a very cheerful ‘good morning’ as she walked past on the way to work.

“The biggest surprise was the sheer number of toots and waves from people shouting their support for our action.

“I talk to stacks of people within the local community and obviously know that the majority of people feel the airport is a terrible burden upon the town, but I was surprised to see the extent of support we had today."
