A MAJOR route in Darcy Lever is to be repaired after an investigation revealed that defective materials were used to resurface it.

Long Lane, which runs from Radcliffe Road to Blenheim Road was resurfaced in August, 2015.

It runs alongside Leverhulme Park and is needed to drive to places such as Leverhulme Park Leisure Centre and St Osmunds Church.

The lane also provides an important cut link between Breightmet and Darcy Lever.

Little Lever and Darcy Lever councillor Sean Hornby said: "The road is a nightmare at the best of times and it's a very well used road as a cut-through towards Moses Gate and Little Lever.

"When it was resurfaced, it was very poor workmanship.

"The good news is that it was done by a private contractor so it will be re-done at their cost."

A letter has been sent out to local residents to inform them of the resurfacing works, which are due to start on May 20, and last around two weeks.

The letter has been sent by Bolton Council's Director of Place, Gerald Brough.

It reads: "Following on from the resurfacing works which were undertaken in August 2015, the road condition of Long Lane has continued to deteriorate. Investigations have determined this is due to a failure in the material which was used at the time the works took place.

"The contractor who undertook these resurfacing works has agreed to carry out further remedial measures on Long Lane at no cost to Bolton Council. This will involve removing the defective material and replacing with new surfacing.

"The Council would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused to local residents and road users, but every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum. Your patience would be appreciated during this time."
