FORGET about the Liverpool-City battle for the Premier League title…we’ve got our own two-way tussle in the Betfred Super League, with the Saints well and truly in the driving seat..

We are sitting four points clear at the top over nearest rivals Warrington who are on 20, four points better off than the third placed and inconsistent Hull FC.

The top two teams Saints and Wolves, who were both favourites to make the Grand Final before a ball was kicked are clearly living up to that billing, both posting 50 point wins this weekend over Catalans and Huddersfield respectively. No surprise that title sponsors Betfred make both teams short odds for success at Old Trafford in October.

After Saints convincing defeat of Warrington three weeks ago, no shock that they are short odds favourites at 6/5, with Warrington 15/8, followed by Castleford who are among the chasing pack at 9/1. However, as we know nothing is won at this time of year.

St Helens’ win against Catalan on Sunday, the only team to take points off the league leaders this year, will have certainly given the gaffer a lot of confidence in his squad for the rest of the season.

Without eight regular first-choice players following a gruelling Easter period, either rested, injured (or in Morgan Knowles case suspended!), including fans’ favourite Lachlan Coote, skipper James Roby and Golden Boot winner Tommy Makinson, Justin Holbrook put his faith in his young guns - and what a performance they turned out.

With Welsby, Costello, Smith and Lees all in the starting line-up, with Bentley, Ashworth and Batchelor on the bench the average age was certainly down! After a slow start allowing Catalan to go in front early on, the boys never looked back, producing a dominating second half display to win 50-14, with youngster Matty Costello grabbing a second half hat-trick, the first of his career.

Looking at this performance, and the age of some of the ‘big names’ missing in this game, the likes of Luke Thompson, Mark Percival and Knowles the future certainly looks bright. One thing I do know, with the culture we have at Saints the young stars like Welsby and Smith will continue to improve and develop their already-outstanding talents.

The Sky TV games this week see the Wigan Warriors take on bottom club London Broncos. Following an unconvincing 6-4 win against Castleford last weekend, I can’t see past another Warriors win, while Castleford this week host the Blake Austin-led Warrington Wolves. With an ever growing injury list I cannot see the Tigers taking the points, with the Wolves winning by 14 points (9/4 at Betfred)

Saints have to wait till Sunday to face the struggling Hull KR at the KComm Stadium. Second from bottom of the Betfred Super League, the Robins will be hoping for a better start than their last outing at Leeds, going 28-0 down before scoring 24 unanswered points and nearly snatching the win.

Saints challenge is not being complacent and going out with the attitude and application they have shown all year, and if they do I can’t see past a comfortable win by 20 points (6/4 at Betfred).

Finally, I see Super League CEO Rob Elston is considering following the NRL and having two referees. I’m personally not sure...1. have we got enough quality referees to be consistent throughout all games, all season? and, 2. I think the game is already too much about rules and officiating. We have brought in new rules this season, including the shot-clock to speed the game up and see the ball in play more Let’s just enjoy watching the players COMPETE!
