THIS week we take a look at a host of images featuring life in the St John’s Green area of Colchester.

Commanded by the majestic remains of St John’s Abbey, in particular the Abbey Gate, this area of the town also takes part of its name from the green space in front the abbey gate.

The Abbey Gate, with its intricate design, dates back to the 1400s and is all that remains of the Benedictine Abbey itself.

Our archive images also show life through the decades at St John’s Green School which dates back more than 100 years.

These include the centenary celebrations at the Victorian school in 1998 and images of pupils as far back as 1928, just three decades after it opened.
