Highway bosses apologised for the roadworks at Fambridge and Mundon Road, however, added they must be completed.

The Standard contacted Essex County Council about the planned closures in Maldon and at Mundon Wash Bridge, which residents are concerned will cut off two vital routes in and out of Maldon.

The council have said although it is inconvenient, the works must be carried out, adding that emergency services and buses will not be affected.

An Essex Highways spokesperson said: “We apologise sincerely to all those people who are inconvenienced by this work.

"However, the Mundon Wash Bridge does need replacing quickly for the safety of drivers using the road over it.

“Similarly the extensive developer road improvement works affecting Fambridge Road from Monday, must be carried out in time to meet the needs of those new residents who will live locally.

“The closure of Fambridge Road will only affect northbound traffic travelling into Maldon.

"Southbound traffic will still be able to use Fambridge Road, as will buses and emergency vehicles driving northbound.

“The future full closures of Fambridge Road are for two nights only for resurfacing work but the developers are hoping to ensure some bus access as well as for emergency vehicles.

“Some drivers will face a lengthy diversion during this period, but this cannot, unfortunately, be avoided given the circumstances we face."

Closures will begin on April 29, where Taylor Wimpey, developer behind new homes at Limebrook Way have said a number of improvement works will be carried it, including;

- Installation of two new 40m ghost right turn lanes on Fambridge Road.

- Two new bellmouths to be installed joining Fambridge Road to the proposed development.

- New street lighting.

- New three-metre cycleway from Limebrook Way to the north bellmouth.

- New toucan crossing on Limberook Way with associated signals.
