PART of Harwich Road will be closed for another two weeks due to water leakages.

The carriageway is collapsing and gas has had to be shut off in the surrounding area, where works are being carried out to create single roundabouts at Harwich Road and Ipswich Road.

Harwich Road has been closed since April 1 between the roundabout and the junction with Greenstead Road, but Essex County Council has said due to issues relating to water leakage, it will have to be closed for even longer.

They said: "This has resulted in a substantial subsidence in the carriageway.

"Anglian Water responded to the situation as a matter of urgency and are currently carrying out extensive investigations to bring about a speedy resolution.

"This, unfortunately, has resulted in the gas diversion works being temporarily suspended in this area."

The contractors, Eurovia, and Anglian Water, are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

The section of the road will now be closed until May 6.

A full diversion and advance warning signage is in place.
