A FOX took part in an inaugural fun run which raised £2,500 for village amenities.

The Layer five-mile run and one mile children's fun run took place from Layer-de-la-Haye on Sunday.

The multi-terrain five-mile route included Abberton Reservoir and attracted a field of 250 runners.

It was won by Colchester Harriers Athletics Club member Nate Filer with Becky Day, from Boxted Runners, finishing first for the females.

Prizes were also awarded for the first female and male village resident and won by Gemma Weir and Matthew Sycamore respectively.

A total of 65 children took part in the fun run through Layer Woods, joined by the fox from the Layer Fox Pub.

Money raised will be donated to village organisations including the pre-school and primary school.

Craig Mitchell, run director, said: "I was overwhelmed with the support from the community and would like to thank the sponsors, marshals, supporters and the runners for making this such a great event.

"The committee behind the event are looking to make this an annual event for the village."
