IT might be a familiar area to many but Southway in Colchester and surrounding streets has seen major changes over the past few decades.
Southway itself was built in the early part of the ‘70s, preparation for which included knocking down the Eastern Electricity buildings in Stanwell Street.
These images from our archives show how the road has been used by drivers and pedestrians since that time.
And it also reveals the changing buildings and backdrop including the arrival of new offices and the loss of older familiar buildings.
