Cheeky vandals have made alterations to a sign on the A120 welcoming drivers to a small hamlet.

Motorists driving between Colchester and Braintree are now being welcomed to the hamlet of "Surrey", instead of Surrex.

Gazette:

It appears someone has used white tape to cover up some of the X on the sign, which lies just off the westbound side of the carriageway near Coggeshall, meaning it now appears to be a Y.

Gazette:

The Surrex sign was ridiculed by some when it was first installed back in 2015.

Speaking at the time, Braintree Council leader Graham Butland described the sign as “nonsense” and suggested that signs showing the boundary of the Braintree district were needed instead.

Campaigners had long called for the installation of the sign to make drivers aware of the hamlet and the need to take care when driving through it.

The Save Lives Not Time campaign said the signs had dramatically improved the safety of the A120 at the junction of Houchin's Lane.
