Train enthusiasts will be able to step back in time and take a ride on the railways under steam power.

The Steam Dreams Rail Co will be running a route from Colchester to Norwich next month.

The unique trip will depart from Colchester behind B1 steam locomotive Mayflower, which returns to the tracks this year after a three year refurbishment.

It will leave town at 12.45pm on Thursday April 11 heading east to Suffolk.

Passengers will be able to enjoy a Champagne brunch on board.

The locomotive, which was one of only two surviving of its class, will arrive in Norwich at 2.45pm where passengers can choose to continue on along the Mid Norfolk railway or remain in Norwich.

The return journey will depart the cathedral city at 5.50pm and return to Colchester at 8.40pm.

David Buck, chairman of Steam Dreams, said: “Passengers are in for a real treat on this fabulous trip.

“It is the first of its kind for us and we are very excited to be running it with this fantastic locomotive, which is from the same design stable as the famous Flying Scotsman.”

The Mayflower was built in 1948 by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow but was delivered post-nationalisation and acquired the number 61306 by British Railways.

Her last journey was from Leeds in September 1967.

She has since been restored and initially returned to the rails in 2015, before undergoing an overhaul and taking to the tracks again this year.

Prices for the trip range £109 per person to £279 per person depending on class and journey length.
