THERE is no denying the roadworks in Ipswich Road, Colchester, are a pain in the proverbial for everyone.

Drivers are stuck in queues of traffic causing delays on a daily basis.

The financial cost of the lost time does not bear thinking about and don’t even start on the effect of that congestion on the environment.

But, to use a well-known phrase, you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs.

Or, in other words, Colchester’s enduring traffic problems are not going to get fixed on their own.

We all know it only takes a drop of rain or a broken down car for the whole transit system to grind to a halt.

So something had to be done and highways experts say simplifying the double roundabout system is the way forward.

We are sceptical, but we hope they are right.

There is still another ten months of delays to suffer before the scheme is finished.

However, no matter how frustrating the roadworks are, poor driving behaviour is not acceptable.

We have heard of motorists driving the wrong way along the road and now of passengers hopping out of cars to move bollards out of the way so cars can manoeuvre through no go areas.

This is selfish and highly dangerous.

Is it really worth putting lives at risk for the sake of five minutes? Maybe it is symptomatic of the lack of responsibility to our fellow man we see all too often.
