THE firm behind the proposed redevelopment of St Botolph's in Colchester has expressed its disappointment after its plans were unanimously rejected by the planning committee.

Alumno Group's proposals for Colchester's so-called cultural quarter, which included 336 students flats, an 87-bed Travelodge, retail units and public space, were rejected by the committee at a fiery meeting on Thursday.

Despite planning officers recommending the scheme for approval, councillors refused permission on the grounds of disabled access, lack of public consultation, overdevelopment and design issues.

Now the developer has spoken out about the decision and says it has yet to decide on its next move.

A spokesman for Alumno said: "Alumno Group are very disappointed the planning committee decided to refuse our application for the redevelopment of the St Botolph’s Quarter.

"The plans went through a rigorous pre application process with both Colchester Council planning officers and key consultees such as Historic England, Anglian Water and Essex Highways.

"The application also had a strong recommendation for approval.

"In the coming days and weeks Alumno will consider their options of how best to take forward their plans."

Alumno could appeal the decision, which would mean a big legal bill for Colchester Council, submit revised proposals or walk away entirely from the scheme.
