A witness has described the moment an armed gang attacked a man in Southend high street.

The incident came hours before a fatal stabbing and has sparked fears about the safety of the borough’s streets.

The man, in his 20s, was attacked near the railway bridge in Southend High Street on Thursday evening, shortly after 8pm.

He was chased by three men on pushbikes one of whom pulled a machete out of his waistband and stabbed the victim before they all cycled off in the direction of Park Street.

A witness, who has asked not to be named, said: “He looked like a young man on his own. Three men on bikes came past him and then doubled back and beat him.

“One pulled out a massive knife and swung it at his head.

“They then chased him around from the bridge up towards South Essex College.

“I wanted to help but when I saw the machete I was scared so I ran away and called the police.”

Medics arrived and the victim was taken to hospital and treated for non-serious injuries.

The witness added: “All these stabbings make me feel unsafe and I’m considering moving out of the area.

“The police seem powerless to stop the violence. It might be random - it might not be but either way it feels unsafe especially in the high street.”

Police do not believe the incident is linked to the murder investigation.

Investigating officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw any suspicious behaviour in the area around this time.
