FAMILIES had the chance to explore some of the grandest trains this half term.

The East Anglian Railway Museum, at Chappel Station, hosted a half term Diesel Day offering unlimited rides on one of the classic diesel trains on Wednesday afternoon.

Visitors had the chance to explore the vintage carriages and enormous goods shed.

Families could also check out some of the grand old locomotives under restoration at the museum.

The playground is also train-themed and gave youngsters a chance to have some fun in the sun on the spring-like afternoon.

Visitors had a go at operating the signal box and climbing into the big red double-decker bus before settling down with a picnic on the fields nearby.

The cafe also ran a drawing competition every day during half term.

Pete Martin, chairman and trustee of the East Anglian Railway Museum, said the day was successful.

He said: “There were lots of people who were educated, enlightened and entertained.

“We had glorious weather and people had a chance to look behind the scenes.”

He said it was nice to see young people and families at the event “keeping steam heritage alive”.

The next diesel days at the railways museum take place on Wednesday, May 29, and Wednesday, October 30.
