VETERAN disc jockey Tony Blackburn will be making a return visit to Clacton to take audiences on a tour through the sounds of the 1960s.

The former pirate radio DJ, famed for his career aboard an offshore station, is sailing into Clacton’s Princes Theatre on Saturday, March 2.

Blackburn - who presents BBC Radio 2’s weekly Sounds of the 60s show - will tell crowds his stories of his time on Radio Caroline’s pirate radio ship MV Mi Amigo.

His new live show, featuring songs, stories and memories from the golden era of pop music will be heard all over the country for the tour.

Music will be performed by the touring Sounds Of The 60s All Star Band and Singers.

Tony said: “I can’t wait to get out on the road with some great musicians and visit some of my favourite towns and cities, spreading the great Sounds of 60s across the UK.

“Grab your tickets, come along and enjoy a terrific night with me, featuring some great stories and some great live music.”

The 75-year-old described his love of daily life in the Swinging Sixties, when Radio Caroline DJs including Blackburn and Dave Lee Travis were at the height of their fame.

Blackburn was born in Guildford, Surrey, but his family moved to Bournemouth in 1946 then Hampshire.

His mother Pauline Cubitt was a nurse and his father Kenneth Fleming Blackburn was a GP.

Blackburn was educated in Poole then attended Millfield School in Somerset on a sports scholarship and captained the school’s cricket team.

He left before taking any examinations, but gained O-levels following private tuition.

Settling off the coast of Tendring on April 27, 1964, the MV Mi Amigo broadcasted as Radio Atlanta.

The broadcasts led to complaints from the General Post Office over communications being affected.

On July 2, Radio Atlanta merged with Radio Caroline, with Mi Amigo broadcasting as Radio Caroline South.

On January 20, 1966, heavy winds caused the ship’s anchor chain to break and the Mi Amigo ran aground off Clacton.

The crew and DJs were rescued by local lifeboat crews.

Blackburn brings Sounds of the 60s to Clacton on Saturday, March 2.

Tickets cost £21 and are bookable from livenation.co.uk.
