Firefighters have shut a road after a car burst into flames.

Residents were in shock as they saw the front of a white Ford S-Max on fire in Green Lane, Burnham.

Joanna Hope, 38, of Maldon Road said the driver was inside the vehicle as flames started to surround the front of the car.

She said: "The driver was inside when it started and he said to me he pulled over as the smoke got too bad."

The crew quickly arrived to tackle the blaze, which appeared to start beneath the vehicle's bonnet.

Michael Davis, from Burnham was cycling up the road when he saw smoke filling up around the vehicle.

Video footage taken by Mr Davis showed the vehicle as the blaze broke out.

He said: "I was cycling up Green Lane and noticed a car with smoke coming out, the car then caught fire so I stood at the top of the road to re-direct cars away from the fire.

"The fire brigade have now put the fire out and blocked the road off with tape."

The fire was dealt with by around 10.45am.

Mrs Hope was also amazed by the quick work of the firefighters, who were on the scene by around 10.10am.

She added: "I was relieved that the driver was okay, but It was shocking to see how difficult it was to extinguish.

"I really cannot stress enough the amazing job those firefighters did.

"To watch them at work was amazing."

The Mayor of Burnham, Wendy Stamp commented on social media: "Very quick emergency service response, thank you firefighters. Hope the car occupants are okay."

The road remains closed.

No injuries were reported following the incident.
