A FOODIE has set up a micro bakery from her own home, baking up to 60 loaves a week all completely by hand.

Sue Goldsmith has always had a passion for making her own meals from scratch.

After her retirement she contacted a group called Bread Angels.com, based in London, a group advocating “real” bread.

After making the random phone call to Bread Angels about 18 months ago, Sue, who lives in Wivenhoe, now has a dedicated clientele and is baking up to 60 loaves of bread over two days.

She is the only Bread Angel in Essex.

Sue, who used to work in local government, said: “Bread Angels was set up eight years ago, the founder felt bread was not respected or taken seriously.

“It’s about real ingredients and making bread by hand, with care and with love.

“I have always loved proper food and making food from scratch. We had a bread maker but that was still using a machine.

“This is all done by hand.”

She sends out an email at the beginning of the week with a list of what she will be making.

Her customers will then respond with their requirements before Wednesday.

She uses Thursday to plan what breads she will make and gets baking on Friday and Saturday.

When the bread is ready, she will contact the customers who will come and collect it from bread bins outside the house.

On the list this week, she has Rye Sourdough with cranberry and pink peppercorn, soda bread with rosemary and sea salt, to name just a few.

She said: “Sourdough is definitely a favourite, it’s made from natural yeast.

“It takes about 18 hours from start to finish from scratch.”

She now teaches bread making classes in her own home and held her first one at the weekend.

She said: “It was successful, I invite people into my home and we spend about four hours doing some pretty intense bread making.

“I would like to start going into schools to teach bread making.”

As well as her bread making business, she also makes pickles and preserves.

She said: “It’s an up and rising industry wanting to make your own things, these kinds of classes are so inspiring.”
