A BUS carrying passengers was just one of the vehicles caught up in an unexpectedly high tide which left drivers stranded.

The surprise surge tide hit The Strood between Colchester and Mersea Island on Tuesday afternoon.

The number 67 First bus found itself trapped in the flooded road but managed to carry on through the water.

Water got into the bottom of the bus but a spokesman for First said it was only a small amount.

She said: “We can confirm on Tuesday there was an unexpected high-tide whilst one of our vehicles was crossing The Strood, but at no point were any customers placed at risk.

“The vehicle did not suffer any damage and the vehicle was deemed safe to continue to operate for the remainder of the day.”
