Essex filmmaker Jamie Weston has been back in the county over the last couple of weeks shooting his latest film.

Entitled Wings it's a collaboration with actor, writer and producer Carla Fraser.

Jamie says: "Back in 2014 a very crude form of Wings was first conceived while I was fortunate enough to be working on a Heritage Lottery funded documentary called Essex Girls. We were looking at how strong women throughout the ages have shaped so many of the rights we currently take for granted and in doing so change the stigma of the Essex Girl.

"Whilst watching the sections about the Land Army, I found myself with so many questions about what was life like for women during that time, so much was still to be said."

After filming on a farm in Great Bentley last week Jamie, Carla and their crew were shooting at a house in Clacton.

Carla adds: "Filming has gone a lot quicker than we thought it might.

"Amongst the chaos that comes with times of war, some people were also fighting a personal battle, and though war meant striving for the nation’s freedom; even once the country was secured, some couldn’t be truly free.

"During the Second World War an individual could serve their country, in the most courageous, poignant ways, but once the chaos of conflict was over, the country wanted to return to the ‘norm’, and even the most dynamic of soldiers were imprisoned and stripped of the freedom they’d fought for - all because they loved someone of the ‘wrong’ sex.

"Recent media has began to shine a light on homosexuality amongst men during historical wars, but when searching for informative memoirs, interviews or publications about British lesbians during these periods, we found next to nothing, and the lack of documentation then said it all - this, is precisely why Wings has to be made."

Carla and Jamie have already got some rather impressive actors to support them including Born Free's Virginia McKenna and Miriam Margolyes.

And there's a very story as to how the latter got involved.

Carla says: "I was just walking in London when I saw her and thought it was just too good an opportunity to miss. I asked whether she minded me leaving a script with her because I thought our film might be something she was interested in. She then told me to sit down and have a coffee with her while she read it.

"I think it was the scariest moment of my life just sitting there but after she had read it she put the script down asked simply what part would she be playing."

Due for release next April, Carla and Jamie have set up a Kickstarter campaign to help raise money to cover the production costs of the film.
