A DRIVER is lucky to be alive after a bike came off the back of a vehicle on the A12 and smashed into his car windscreen.

Lee Smart was driving his blue Ford Kuga home from work, in the direction of Colchester, on Friday evening.

He was driving in the right hand lane between Marks Tey and Stanway, when he saw sparks to his left.

The next thing he knew a bike had hit his windscreen.

He said: “The weather had been quite bad that evening.

“I saw sparks to my left and they came towards me.

“The bike hit the front side of my car, bounced up and smashed the windscreen, then rolled towards the back of my vehicle.

“I had no visibility as the rain was coming down.”

No other cars around him stopped after the incident, so there is no knowing where the bike had come from.

Lee had to leave the A12 at Stanway to assess the damage.

A driver who had been behind him in the middle lane had followed him and stopped to make sure Lee was not hurt.

Lee added: “It all happened so quickly. I did not see the bike come off the back of a vehicle but the driver behind me said he saw it.

“It was dark and raining so you couldn’t see the colour or number plate on the car.

“Someone must have gone home to realise their bike was missing.

“I have shared it on social media in the hope someone will come forward.”

Luckily Lee managed to keep control of his car and was not badly injured by the car has been severely damaged.

He added: “I think I was more in shock. I was covered in glass.

“It could have been a lot worse, if I had swerved to the right I would have crashed into the central barrier.

“I have got a bump on my head, I don’t know if it’s because my dash cam flew forward or if it was a large piece of glass.

“I’m just shocked no-one stopped.”

Police recovered the bike, which was in a mangled state, but could not fit it in their vehicle at the time.

The red rally bike was left at the side of the A12 near Stanway.

The incident happened just before 5.30pm.

Police are trying to identify the driver of the vehicle the bicycle fell from.
