A WOMAN has told how her disabled husband was injured after being trapped by broken kerb stones.

Pensioner Evelyn Potter’s husband Eric, 85, was left with a badly bruised foot after getting it trapped between the path and a broken kerb on Orchard Road, Alresford.

Essex County Council has said the defects do not need fixing urgently – despite having received more than 16 complaints.

Mr Potter, who has Parkinson’s disease, had been out in his electric wheelchair when the accident happened.

Mrs Potter, 82, said: “He got caught between the path and the kerb as he was going along.

“His first thought was trying to get out and he managed to hold onto a wall and support himself.

“He thought he was going to fall out of it. His foot was jammed between the path and the kerb.”

A neighbour rushed to get Mrs Potter who was able to free Mr Potter and wheel him back home.

She said: “I thought his foot was broken or fractured

“It left an indent and it came up in a bruise right away.”

Mrs Potter said the incident had knocked Mr Potter’s confidence. She said: “He wouldn’t go out unless I went with him. Being disabled, that is his bit of freedom.

“I told him to keep off the path and just go in the road but that is just as dangerous as people come along there at some speed.

“The kerbs on Orchard Road are absolutely terrible.”

Mrs Potter is also one of a number of drivers who have been left counting the cost after hitting broken kerb stones in her car.

She was left with a flat tyre which cost £60 to replace.

Last week, Essex Highways said someone would be sent to assess the road and see if any repairs could be completed.

An Essex County Council spokesman added: “We were very sorry to hear about the injury to the gentleman and hope he is recovering.

“We will be carrying out significant works in the new year to ensure that the area is made safe.”
