A FOUR-legged friend has been settling into life at a care home after being brought in to help residents with dementia.

Lady, a chihuahua-papillion cross, has been bedding in at Colne View, in Halstead, and getting used to her new responsibilities.

She was rescued by customer relations manager, Kim Richardson, from a puppy farm in Colchester more than four years ago and despite her turbulent start in life she's settled in well.

Her main role at the Dame Mary Walk home is to be on hand for residents to make a fuss over, walk or simply spend time with.

The seven-year-old has even been given the official title of canine relations manager and she spends much of her time patrolling the home to ensure everything is in order.

Home manager Razvan Stanbeca, said: "When I announced that we would be taking on a canine relations manager, I’m sure people thought I was barking mad, but Lady has been an important part of life at Colne View for a few of years now, so we thought it was about time she officially became one of the team.

"Lady can often be found cuddled up to a resident in the coffee shop or hitching a ride on someone’s wheelchair - the place really wouldn’t be the same without her.

"We know just how beneficial animal therapy can be for older people - especially for those living with dementia.

"Being close to animals can help lift a person’s mood, stimulate social interaction and ease agitation – and Lady is brilliant at doing just that."
