Unfortunately your story on Monday, November 26 about Essex County Council's libraries consultation and the property investment fund inaccurately linked two completely different areas of council business.
The unique way all councils are funded means the budget used to purchase property cannot be used to directly fund services such as libraries.
However, the income derived from the investment does provide an income stream, which can be used to pay for such services.
Indeed, the decision to invest in commercial property has secured additional money for council services through the generation of the rental income.
Investments made so far are returning about £1 million annually to the county council, which in turn helps to balance the budget that funds public services.
Cllr Louise McKinlay
Essex County Council Cabinet Member for finance, commercial and traded services
