AN extravagant firework show, performances from Santa and his elves and gifted musicians made a shopping centre’s festivities a night to remember.

Lion Walk hosted its Christmas light switch-on, which included performances by Theatretrain, Colchester Institute and other musicians.

Colchester’s deputy mayor Nick Cope turned on the lights and back by popular demand Colchester musical icon Abbie Hartley took to the stage to entertain onlookers.

A dazzling firework display meant the night ended with a bang and to complete the line-up, Santa and his elves were also there to entertain.

Santa performed magic tricks with the aid of his trusty elves who mingled among the crowd to show off their juggling skills.

A showering of fake snow also got families excited for Christmas and everyone felt the festive spirit.

Lion Walk shopping centre manager Peter Scopes said the light switch-on will be one to remember.

He said: “We are so proud to have the opportunity to work closely with the community and join forces in bringing Colchester’s first class talent together for a truly memorable evening.

“With something for everyone, we were confident the whole of Colchester would have a brilliant night.”

Santa’s elves will stay in the shopping centre every Saturday leading up to Christmas. They have set up a workshop where children can make their own toy.

Shoppers can now also take advantage of free parking for late-night shopping in December on Wednesdays December 5, 12 and 19.

The car parks offering free parking include Vineyard Street, Britannia, Butt Road, Napier Road, Sheepen Road, St Mary’s, St John’s and Middleborough.

Colchester’s town centre shops and restaurants are also open for four consecutive Wednesdays in the run up to Christmas.

Many shops will be open until 9pm to grab those last minute presents.
