A well-known businessman raised more than £3,000 for charity with a mammoth trek across one of the wonders of the world.

Father-of-six Bub Bdesha, owner of Chris's Fish Bar, in Church Road, Tiptree, traversed 30 miles over seven days, up mountains and steep hillsides along the iconic Great Wall of China.

And thanks to his kind-hearted customers, family and friends, the businessman, whose family have run the popular chip shop for more than 30 years, collected just over £3,200 for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

Mr Bdesha said: "I have kids myself and I know what great work the charity does.

"A lot of people have been coming in to the shop and asking if they can donate.

"I would like to thank every single person who helped me, we are happier in the knowledge that we are helping to stop child abuse."

As part of a Charity Challenge group of walkers, Mr Bdesha spent seven consecutive days walking the non-tourist trap sections of the wall.

Along the way, the challenge tackled a series of steep uphill climbs and more than 10,000 steps across the winding path by the Yan Mountains either side of the Gubeikou Gateway before ending in Beijing.

Mr Bdesha said: "I actually broke my toe years ago playing tennis and I smacked it three days before I went out there and broke it again. But I took some painkillers and went.

"It was gruelling and exhilarating at the same time.

"There were times when we had to jump over pieces of the wall on the path.

"You do it all at your own risk and it was quite treacherous to be honest, but it was a real eye-opener.

"I have been all around the world but it was amazing to see the engineering which went into building the wall."

Dozens of Mr Bdesha's loyal customers donated to his appeal and his thinking of the large donation he would be able to make the charity helped him push through the difficult moments.

He added: "I have always wanted to do the Great Wall but I wanted to raise some money for charity at the same time.

"I am glad I was able to raise this money and I think my customers recognised what a great cause it is by giving their donations."
