AN MP who campaigned for Britain to leave the European Union for decades said it is “unlikely” he’d back the Theresa May's Brexit deal.

Harwich and North Essex MP Sir Bernard Jenkin was speaking after the Prime Minister gave a statement in the Commons over the draft treaty to leave the EU.

MPs have now been given a copy of the 500-page draft agreement before a crucial vote on whether to back it next month.

Eleven ministers have resigned over Brexit since the 2017 General Election including four yesterday, after concerns the deal would not deliver what people wanted.

Brexiteer Conservative Sir Bernard was also asked whether had any confidence in Mrs May’s leadership.

But he simply replied “no comment”, adding “I am considering the situation”.

Asked whether he would vote for the draft Brexit agreement, Sir Bernard said: “I am studying the documents and will decide in due course. It looks unlikely but I am going to study the document.”

He added: “I am concerned that it does not seem to meet the assurances the Prime Minister was giving us about it.

“I am concerned as it appears at the moment we can legally leave the EU but under the new agreement it will not be possible without permission from the EU.

"That puts the UK in an impossible position, potentially. It seems most unlikely Parliament will approve this.”

Colchester MP Will Quince, who also voted to leave the EU, said: “As a former lawyer, I hope people will understand why I feel the need to thoroughly go through the 585 pages of the draft legal agreement and supporting documentation before reaching a conclusion.

"However, it is clear to me that as it stands there is no parliamentary majority for this proposed deal and no doubt No10 will be aware and reflecting on this.”

Conservative Braintree MP James Cleverly said he was backing the PM, but added: “There are elements of the proposal I am uncomfortable with, in particular the backstop plans.

"As it stands I do not think there is a credible alternative and what we all have to do is work very hard so we do not have to rely on that backstop.”

Giles Watling, Conservative MP for Clacton, said he will back the Brexit deal if it meets the party’s manifesto pledges.

Witham MP Tory Priti Patel and Maldon party colleague John Whittingdale were both asked for comment.

Mrs May told the Commons: "[The draft] takes back control of our borders, laws and money.

"It protects jobs, security and the integrity of the United Kingdom, and it delivers in ways that many said could simply not be done.”
