A STRAY exotic bird was been rhea-turned home.

The common rhea was found sleeping in a flowerbed in a garden in Great Horkesley on Friday.

The large bird - which is native to South America - had strolled in through a side gate before curling up for a nap.

It is believed the bird may have been wandering around the area for several days before settling in the garden as Essex Police had received a call about it in the days before it was found.

Calls were made to the RSPCA who released an appeal to help trace the owner and the bird was taken to Colchester Zoo to keep it safe.

But now the owner has come forward and taken the bird back.
