A FAMILY lost two caravans of stored items after they were destroyed in an arson attack.

Sarah Francis, 38, was called by her 16-year-old brother after two teenagers had been seen in her step dad’s parked caravans at the Harwich Town bus station on Saturday, October 27.

She saw two boys leaving the area at about 5pm and noticed smoke coming from inside of one of the caravans, which are used for storage.

She said: “The smoke was pouring out. I told my brother to go and call the fire engine as there were flames.

“It got worse and there were two bangs, then the flames got higher and spread to the other caravan and a shed that was nearby.

“People started to stand in the street and watch.”

Sarah said firefighters arrived after ten minutes but police did not attend, instead the details were reported over the phone.

She added: “Two fire engines tackled the blaze. The caravans were both my step dads - they were used for storage.

“Camping equipment and a blow up boat were destroyed in the fire. It was very scary.

“We are pleased no one was hurt but my step dad’s not happy the police still haven’t been in touch.”

Essex Fire Service has said the fire was started deliberately.

A spokesman for Essex Police said the investigating officer has tried to contact the caravan owner and enquiries are continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
