A BAKER from Stroud is on a roll after being declared a winner at the World Bread Awards with the stars of the bread-baking world.

The winner, Dominic Salter of Salt Bakehouse came out on top in the hotly-contested wholegrain category, he also scooped the runner up position in fruit bread.

As well as this, Dominic came third place in the flour baguette category and in speciality sweet.

Host of the awards ceremony, Stephen Hallam, a master baker, spoke of the high standard of this year’s event.

“The field was more competitive than ever,” he said.

His fellow judges, all 90 of them, included legendary baker Richard Bertinet and Dr John Foster of BBC’s Victorian Bakers among other big names.

Fortunately, the critics were highly complementary and left Dominic singing in the grain.

He beat off competition from hundreds of loaves sent in from around the United Kingdom - delivered by courier, taxi and in person on the morning of the judging at Westminster Cathedral.

However, this is not the first time the Stonehouse bakery has been recognised for its doughy delights

Last year, the bakery even won best ciabatta among other honours - as the bakehouse beat off competition from hundreds of bakers.

Caroline Kenyon, director of the World Bread Awards, said: "The choice and quality of bread in Britain today is immense."
