A SCHOOLBOY was left wandering the streets and bleeding from his head after being hit by a car.

Sonny Martin, 14, suffered bad grazing to his face, a fractured shoulder and a detached ear lobe as a result of being hit by the vehicle in Drury Road, Colchester, as he cycled home from school.

The car pulled over and a woman who had been in the car stopped to check on him but carried on despite the youngster’s obvious injuries.

The Philip Morant School student initially tried to go to his aunt Maureen Martin’s house nearby but she was not there.

So he left his mangled bike in her garden and attempted to walk the mile and a half to his own home.

Noticing his state, passersby insisted he went to the nearby Colchester police station where he was spoken to by desk staff and officers about what had happened.

An ambulance was called but officers were told there would be long delays of between two and three hours.

No officers were available to transport him to the hospital from the station and Sonny’s phone had been broken in the crash meaning there was no way to contact his next of kin.

Coincidentally, the mother of one of his friends was in the station and offered to take him to hospital herself.

They were then able to make contact with his aunt through Facebook who read the messages and contacted Sonny’s dad.

Miss Martin reported the incident to the police hours after it happened on Thursday and was told the woman had not technically committed an offence because she stopped - unless she failed to report the accident.

She said: “We have spoken to someone who saw it and they said they barely stopped for a minute.

“He told them he was OK but he was so shaken up.

“He told me at the time he couldn’t feel the pain at that stage, just tried to get up and get on with it.

“But he is a minor with a head injury.

“He is a big lad but he was clearly in school uniform and he was bleeding.

“No-one rang the police or the ambulance at the scene and the woman left pretty much immediately.

“Surely it isn’t right someone can hit a child with their car and then drive away and not commit an offence.

“It beggars belief.”

Sonny has since been discharged from hospital and is now recovering at home.

His family are hoping to get CCTV from the Budgeons store to try to shed more light on the situation.

Miss Martin questioned why more was not done to help him at the police station.

“Obviously we are incredibly grateful the lady was there and it was brilliant of her to take him to hospital and track us down,” she said.

“We can’t thank her enough really.

“But surely he should have been given some kind of first aid while he was at the station?

“They have taken notes from him when he is clearly hurt and then let him go with someone he knows but isn’t family.

“It just all seems odd.”

Essex Police said it was not clear at first he had been hit by a car.

A spokesman said: "A child attended the front desk at Colchester Police Station initially reporting he had come off his bicycle, although it later transpired he had been involved in a collision with a car.

"Attempts were made to find contact numbers for the boy’s family, but unfortunately there was no response from the number we were able to find.

"We attempted to contact a paramedic but they were unable to attend and unfortunately we did not have any officers free to take him to hospital.

"A decision was made to leave him in the care of his friend’s mother so that he could be taken to hospital as soon as possible.

"We are investigating the collision and our enquiries are ongoing."
