A ROYAL British Legion member is appealing for the owner of a soldier's helmet from the First World War to come forward and share their story.

The solider's helmet, with the year 1914 painted on it, has been placed by Manningtree's war memorial by an anonymous resident.

Jamie Robinson, from the Manningtree branch of the Royal British Legion, discovered the helmet on the railings around the memorial on Thursday November 1.

He said: "When I saw the helmet my first reaction was wow - it's so fitting for this time of year with the Armistice Centenary just around the corner.

"It must belong to someone who must have lost someone during the First World War and they are paying respect to that family member by placing the helmet there."

Mr Robinson said he has spoken to residents about the helmet, but still does not know who it belongs to or put it on the railings.

"A few people I have spoken to have said the same thing, that it is very poignant and fitting putting it there," he added.

Mr Robinson is now calling for the owner of the helmet to come forward so he can hear about its history.

He said: "I would like to meet the person who put it there and have a chat with them and ask about the story of the helmet.

"It's still there and we've made a cross with alter poppies on the memorial."

The helmet is on show to residents who wish to see it and it is unclear when or if the helmet will be moved by its owner.
