COLCHESTER'S MP has warned if the Post Office moves to the first floor of WH Smith, the lift could become "the busiest in town".
Although a six-week public consultation is planned, MP Will Quince has written to Kelly Tolhurst, the parliamentary under secretary of state for small business and consumers.
His letter states: "I wanted to write to you and set out my objection to the proposal which I consider to be hugely unsatisfactory.
"Whilst I welcome that opening hours could be increased and include Sundays, Colchester Post Office is always busy and operates out of a large town centre premises, I find it hard to believe that this could be re-located to the upstairs of the existing WH Smith store without considerable disruption to customers of both Post Office and WH Smith.

"In addition, giving particular regard to the age demographic of current Post Office users, moving from a large ground floor premises to a smaller first floor premises will cause considerable issues.
"I have had constituents contact me to say it will be the busiest lift in Colchester."
Mr Quince is also due to meet Post Office representatives on the issue.
