A SCHEME which allows motorists and cyclists to submit footage of bad driving has won a prestigious national road safety award.

Extra Eyes - which is run by Safer Essex Roads Partnership - won the road safety, traffic management and enforcement category at the National Transport Awards.

After reviewing the footage, officers can offer offenders a driver improvement course, a fixed penalty notice or even escalate the incident to court.

This year, more than 1,500 pieces of footage have been received.

SERP chairman Nicola Foster said: “I am delighted the partnership has won this prestigious award in recognition of its innovation and hard work and I applaud all the staff involved in the development and execution of this initiative.

“The Safer Essex Roads Partnership is passionate about achieving its aim to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on the roads and we have all worked really hard to get the Extra Eyes project off the ground.

“The project has given us the opportunity to provide educational courses to those found to need them, which is a positive step towards changing behaviour on our roads and ensuring safety for all.”
