A CAR crashed through a metal barrier at a train station.

Emergency services were on the scene of a crash at Clacton Train Station, in Skelmersdale Road, at the junction of Carnarvon Road.

The smash happened at around 12.45pm.

Witnesses reported seeing Greater Anglia staff trying to help an elderly man, who was in the driving seat.

Ex police officer Mike Robinson said: "I was there before the first emergency services arrived.

"The railway workers were helping, but they couldn't get him out.

"He looked about 90 years old.

"The railings had wrapped themselves around the car, concrete blocks were jamming the doors closed."

Ambulance crews, Essex Police and Essex Fire Service were on the scene.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Shortly before 12.45pm today, officers were called to Clacton station after reports a car had collided with railings at Clacton station.  

"Officers are making enquiries to understand how the car came to be on the tracks."

Greater Anglia said train services remain unaffected by the incident.

Firefighters worked to release a man from the vehicle by 1.11pm.

An Essex Fire Service spokesman said: "Crews reported on arrival that a car had left the roadway and collided with some railings close to a railway line.

"One man was trapped inside the vehicle following the incident.

"No other vehicles were involved.

"Firefighters worked hard to release the man from the vehicle by 1.11pm, before leaving him in the care of the ambulance service and making the scene safe."
