MOTORISTS have been warned they could be prosecuted if they don’t stop when directed to by lollipop ladies after a woman was hit by a car.

The crossing attendant was hit by a car in Hawthorn Avenue, Colchester, during school picking up time on Thursday.

The woman was bruised and shaken but thankfully, she did not need hospital treatment.

Youngsters and their parents were still receiving help to cross the busy road and nearby Bromley Road as normal on Friday.

Essex County Council is in charge of crossing patrols.

A spokesman for the authority confirmed the woman had been hurt in the crash and said it was essential drivers slowed down when they are told to.

He said: “We are aware of an incident that occurred on Thursday outside of Hazelmere Infants and Juniors schools on Hawthorn Avenue, Colchester at around 3.20pm where a school crossing patrol officer was injured by a car.

“The female officer was left bruised and shaken by the incident, which has been reported to Essex Police.

“Road users need to be extra vigilant when driving near to schools and remember to slow down, observe parking restrictions and always stop when directed to by a school crossing patrol. It is an offence not to.”

“We are supporting the officer following the incident and wish her a quick recovery.”

It is against the law to not stop when signalled to by a lollipop lady and penalties can include a fine of up to £1,000 or three penalty points

The driver didn’t stop after hitting the woman.

Anyone who saw the incident is asked to call Essex Police on 101.
