Plans to renovate a town's last remaining set of public toilets look to be back on track.

It can be revealed Halstead Town Council is now accepting bids from tradespeople to complete the planned revamp of the facilities in Kings Road, which are Halstead's only public facilities.

The council is asking for quotes from traders to complete a scheme of improvements, which will see the majority of the facility overhauled.

Altro flooring is set to be used to replace the existing material, with new wipe clean panelling set to be fitted to the walls.

A wider range of facilities for disabled users could be added whilst baby changing facilities are also expected to be installed in two of the three toilets.

It has also been proposed the toilets should no longer be unisex, with separate toilets for women and disabled users, so new signs will need to be made and fitted.

Some cosmetic work to the area outside of the loos is also set to take place as part of the tender contract, however volunteers have offered to step in and paint the outside walls of the toilets in a bid to keep costs down.

Concerns were raised over the future of the revamp in August, when a bid to find a contractor stalled.

However Halstead Town Council has said it plans to use the tender process more frequently moving forwards.

A spokesman said: "Halstead Town Council has never had an up-to-date tendering process, but as part of its broader aim to be part of the Local Council Quality award scheme, it is tidying up all its policies and procedures."

The tender application form can be found at www.halsteadtowncouncil.org.uk.

Completed applications should be sent to the town clerk via email to townclerk@halsteadtowncouncil.org.uk or by post to Queen's Hall, Chipping Hill, Halstead, CO9 2BY.
