With just over 100 days left until the big day, Santa has officially announced when his sleigh will be arriving at Colchester Castle.

Throughout December, the castle's historic Lucas Vaults will be transformed into a Christmas grotto for families to visit and St Nicholas himself will also be in the building to meet children.

Tickets to the grotto cost £6.50 and children will receive a special gift as well as the chance to whisper their dreams into the wishing tree.

A ten per cent discount on the ticket price will also be available for anyone who wishes to visit the castle museum on the same day.

Tim Young, councillor responsible for business and culture, said: "Colchester Castle is a stunning building which over the festive period takes on a rather special ambience.

"In my opinion, it makes for one of the most magical places to see Santa in Colchester.

“I would highly recommend combining your visit to the grotto with a trip to the castle and for residents to pick up an annual resident pass.

"It promises to be a very special Yuletide visit for all the family."

Revellers can also pick up a Christmas trail activity sheet and will be able to enter the council's prize draw for the chance to win a VIP guided tour of the castle's new exhibition in July 2019.

Mr Young added: “Bookings are now open and places are strictly limited – so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment, as Santa has a very busy diary.

“Events like this help support the work Colchester Museums do to preserve our rich heritage for generations to come and build a Better Colchester.”

Santa's grotto will be open on December 8, 9, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22 and 23.
