TRAFFIC came to a standstill on the A12 for an air ambulance to land at the scene of a serious involving a motorcyclist travelling back from a charity event.

The road has been closed in both directed at junction 25 for Marks Tey due to a crash which happened shortly before 4pm today.

Essex Police officer Colin Shead tweeted: “A12 Marks Tey closed in both directions to allow Essex Air Ambulance to land at the scene of a serious RTC.”

Witness Debbie Burrows said there were lots of emergency services on the scene including two fire engines, police, paramedics and eight ambulances.

The northbound carriage reopened at 4.20pm, and the southbound carriage way reopened at about 5.50pm. 

Fire crews from Clacton, Colchester and Coggeshall attended to help a motorist who had left the roadway.

They were flown to a trauma centre at a London hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Hundreds of motorcyclists were heading along the A12 yesterday afternoon following the annual run in aid of Essex and Herts Air Ambulance in Harwich.

The charity confirmed that the injured party was part of the event and wished them a safe recovery.
