THESE vintage images show the changing face of one of Colchester’s most historic streets.

Found in the Dutch Quarter, West Stockwell Street houses a number of ancient buildings and also lays claim to having housed sisters Ann and Jane Taylor, who penned classic nursery rhyme Twinle, Twinkle, Little Star.

As well as West Stockwell Street, the quarter itself includes Maidenburgh Street, East Stockwell Street, St Helen’s Lane, Northgate Street and Nunn’s Road.

It was the 16th century home to Flemish Protestant refugees fleeing religious persecution having been defeated in a rebellion against Catholic Spain but the the houses actually pre-date the Dutch arrival.
