A CONTRACTOR has been appointed to lead a road improvement scheme in Colchester.

There are plans for major roadworks in Ipswich Road, which are designed to alleviate congestion on the route, improve access for all modes of transport and support growth in the town.

Following a public information event held in September 2016, comments have been taken into account and plans have been reviewed.

Works include replacing the double roundabouts at Ipswich Road and Harwich Road with a single roundabout at each location.

The carriageway between Ipswich Road and Harwich Road junctions will also be widened to accommodate two lanes in each direction.

Pedestrian crossings will be upgraded to signal controlled crossings, including general improvements to cycle and footway provisions.

Eurovia has been awarded the contract and expect to be on site until winter 2019.

Essex Highways has arranged a 'meet the contractor' event, which will be held on September 5.

It will take place between 3pm and 8pm, at the Rose & Crown Hotel in East Street, Colchester.

However councillors and cycle campaigners are dubious about the plans.

Lee Scordis (Lab), councillor for Old Heath and Hythe, said it may be unnecessary.

He said: "I have got reservations about whether this will speed up traffic at all.

"It's quite a costly project which might not be needed.

"Cycling also seems to be neglected, it may not be safe for cyclists, particularly at the junction with Waitrose."

He also raised issues of air quality, and said traffic would then be backed up to Brook Street.

Essex Highways said in a letter to residents: "Please be assured advance warning notices and appropriate traffic management will be in place and adjusted according to the phases of the work to ensure the safety of the public and the workforce.

"Two-way traffic flow will be maintained where possible throughout the works however temporary lane reductions will be necessary at different stages.

"Temporary road closures will also be required at different stages of the work however these will be advertised in advance on site signage as well as on the website

"Every effort will be made to maintain property/business access; however, some delays may be experienced depending on the operations being undertaken at the time."
