DETECTIVES are investigating after a man was attacked in the street and suffered serious head injuries.
The 49-year-old victim was in a "critical but stable" condition in hospital, after the assault in the early hours of today.
He was found lying on a footpath off Ladbrook Drive, in the Abbot's Road area of Colchester.
Police sealed off the walkway as forensic officers hunted for clues.
A force spokesman appealed for witnesses to come forward as the search for the man's attacker, or attackers, got under way.
The victim was discovered on the footpath, which leads to Jackson Walk and the parking area of Sargeant Close, at about 1am.
Paramedics called in police before taking him by ambulance to Colchester General Hospital.
