Thieves smashed their way into an art exhibition, leaving a trail of destruction.
The "mindless" criminals broke into the building, at Mistley railway station, which was being revamped in time for its planned opening next month.
Early on Wednesday, its owners made the discovery.
Lucy Ainger, who owns the gallery with Alex Perry, said: "Paint was thrown over the walls and paperwork was wiped over the floor.
"Flowers were strewn down the stairs," she added.
She said a tool box worth more than £650 had been snatched, which had been left there by an electrician who is helping with the current re-vamp.
"It is stupid and mindless," she said.
Miss Ainger announced plans to open the Mistley High Street gallery in April. It had been empty for more than three years, before when it was residential.
Miss Ainger said: "The cost of repair will hit us quite hard."
"But we still feel very positive about the gallery and the community artist's progress.
"We intend to remain here and will endeavour to open at some point in September."
