A town councillor has revealed how an accident on a "notoriously" dangerous road left him devastated.

Now John Brown wants all sections of the A120 dualled - not just parts of it.

Mr Brown, a Harwich town councillor, raised his concerns on the road's safety during a town council meeting.

He said he witnessed a fatal accident in which a grandfather from Braintree died.

He said: "I believe it was the fourth fatal accident in ten years. It was devastating to see."

He said he had watched as a baby was among those taken out of the wrecked car.

Mr Brown insists the only safe way was to dual the road which runs from Harwich to Puckeridge via Colchester, Braintree, Great Dunmow and Bishop's Stortford.

He said: "I am asking for this council to assist me. I will visit neighbouring councils to form a committee to have something done."

Dave Rutson agreed setting up a committee was a good idea.

Councillors heard how Garry Calver had asked Essex Police for a breakdown of accidents on the A120 since 2000.

"There's no question something has to be done about it but we need a co-ordinated approach," he said.

But Les Double said even if approval were given today it would take at least seven years before work could start.

"What we need to be doing is talking about robust speed reduction on certain sections of the A120, particularly at the Wix turn off and the Ramsey roundabout," he said.

Town councillors agreed to wait for the police figures.
