War heroes are appealing to football fans to get behind a charity contest.

The Gazette is taking on Clacton Town Allstars to raise money for a war memorial appeal.

The Royal British Legion is spearheading a campaign to build a 6 ft obelisk in Clacton town centre to commemorate conflicts involving British forces since 1945.

Plaques and monuments along the seafront are dedicated to the First and Second World Wars but there is nothing in the town to remember more than 20 conflicts since then.

The veterans need to raise at least £4,000.

FC Clacton has agreed to host the money-spinning game at its Rush Green Bowl ground.

Clacton Town stars from yesteryear are expected to line up alongside a few current players.

The game is on Bank Holiday Monday, August 27, kicking off at 3pm.

Anyone else who wants to get involved can call Mr Fuller on 07941 315625 or 01255 428885.
