A date has been set for when the new High Steward of Harwich will officially take on the role.

Community stalwart Chris Strachan was nominated for the honour, which is a ceremonial role dating back to the 13th century, by Steven Henderson, leader of Harwich Town Council.

Mr Henderson's council colleagues agreed with the nomination and Mr Strachan accepted.

The late Bill Bleakley served as High Steward of Harwich for 25 years.

Mr Bleakley was a leading community figure, who also served as a councillor for more than 40 years.

He died in March, just two months before he was due to retire as a town and district councillor.

On November 1, a special meeting of the council will be held to begin the investiture of the new High Steward.
