Six derelict chalets in Brooklands, which have become a target for vandals and arsonists, have been cleared by the Friends of Brooklands.
A trio from the group got permission from the owner to demolish the dilapidated buildings and burn and remove the rubble. They plan to smarten up the plots.
Mick Masterson, chairman of the Friends of Brooklands, said: "The community gets fed-up waiting for councils and building owners to argue over enforcement action.
"The sites end up being used as a dumping grounds for rubbish or get vandalised. We live for the here and now, so we want to get these sites cleaned up and the community's best asset is the community itself."
