Despite the recent capture of David Masters and Chris Wright to bolster their pace-bowling armoury, Danish Kaneria is backing the county's young bowlers to prove their worth to Essex.

"I've seen enough of people like Mervyn Westfield, Maurice Chambers and Jahid Ahmed to believe they could do an excellent job for Essex, provided they stay fit," he said.

"Personally, I think Essex should give those three the opportunities because they have a lot of talent.

"They have spent a lot of time developing them and they can ultimately be rewarded for the faith they have shown in the players.

"All teams are looking for promising fast bowlers and we have a number at Essex - they will prove their worth given the time and opportunity."

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old Pakistan leg-spinner, who has already committed himself to another year with the county as their overseas player for 2008, has insisted he wants to remain with Essex beyond that time.

"I love playing for Essex and I'd like to think I can help them return to the First Division in the County Championship.

"If Pakistan Test commitments allow, then I would be happy to return and continue playing county cricket for Essex as long as I can."

Kaneria admits there was interest from a number of other clubs before he penned his present contract with Essex.

"A number of counties showed an interest and I was offered more money to go elsewhere but my heart is with Essex and that is where I want to be," he stated.

Meanwhile, only two overs of play were possible in the County Championship match between Essex and Leicestershire at Colchester on the opening day of the Cricket Festival in Castle Park.
