An ancient church is welcoming visitors as part of Colchester's contribution to next month's Heritage Open Days promotion.

The 14th-century St Leonard's on Hythe Hill, maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust, opens its doors just a handful of times each year.

One of these occasions will be Saturday, September 8, when it hosts a craftwork and activities exhibition by the Cameo All Age Club, and another by the Engineering Society between 10am and 4pm.

The Town to Sea Trail banner, prepared by local artisits, will also be on display.

Elsewhere in the New Town and Hythe area, volunteers at the Community Church, also on Hythe Hill, are to organise games and activities, while the Community Centre on Ventura Drive will be runing various workshops.

King Edward's Quay is to stage musical events all day and on into the evening.

The day will culminate in a spectacular firework display at 10pm.
