INQUISITIVE children spent the day uncovering the past at Colchester Castle.

The event was held during the half term holidays, giving children the chance to explore Colchester’s Roman roots with archaeologists and get up close to ancient remains.

Uncover the Past was an event run by the Castle Museum and was aimed at young children and families.

Colchester Council said an average of 20 children attended each session.

The young historians were given a talk from curators at the museum about the history of the artefacts.

They were then able to do some artwork, drawing and colouring in ancient coins.

There was also a mini archaeological dig in the sandpit area, where the children were taught how the process works.

Tim Young, councillor responsible for Business and Culture, said: “Initiatives like Uncover the Past are a fantastic way of helping expand the knowledge and enthusiasm of young people about Colchester’s rich past in a fun way.

“The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who attended.”
